The countdown is on for over 5 weeks of summer fun at RHS Garden Rosemoor. Families can embark on an out-of-this-world adventure this summer in Devon as the RHS Garden goes space mad.
Youngsters can follow the intergalactic, space-themed, garden trail, enjoy stratospheric storytelling with the Entertainingly Different crew, create cosmic crafts, visit the Rocket Science Exhibition, take part in Puppet Theatre workshops and discover how our feathered friends have influenced flight and space exploration during spectacular birds-of-prey flying displays. Visitors are bound to spot ‘The Rosemoor Rocket’, a massive 15ft sculpture created by Rosemoor’s very own Bob Jackson using recycled garden equipment.
The rocket science-themed summer activities have been inspired by the RHS Campaign for School Gardening and UK Space Agency project, Rocket Science, in which 2kg of rocket seeds were sent to the International Space Station. The seeds – which spent several months in microgravity under the care of British European Space Agency astronaut Tim Peake – have now been returned to Earth and have been grown by hundreds of thousands of schoolchildren in a huge experiment to investigate the impact of microgravity and space travel on seed germination and growth.
Rosemoor is running its own rocket seed growing experiment throughout the summer so visitors can find out first-hand about the ‘Rocket Science’ campaign.
Sally Charleton, Head of Site at RHS Garden Rosemoor, said: “Thanks to Tim Peake’s inspiration and the RHS Campaign For School Gardening Rocket Science campaign, all things space-related are very topical and extremely popular, so we wanted to give our visitors the chance to enjoy their very own intergalactic adventure.”
She went onto say “We’ve got so many different activities throughout the summer holidays and every day there is something fun for all the family to enjoy including other events which are not space orientated, such as Outdoor Theatre with ‘Ratburger’ – based upon famous comedian and children’s author David Walliams’ book. There is also our Local Produce Show and late summer Plant Fair too.”
