Learn the basics of survival, through exhibitors and activities 18 - 19 March 2017

For all those budding Bear Grylls or Ray Mears out there wanting to gain the skills and knowledge to survive or for those who just want to get closer to nature through living off the land then RHS Garden Rosemoor’s Wilderness Weekend could be just the ticket for you with fun activities for all the family.

“Hunger Drives You” with The Royal Marines Association. Visitors can learn the basics of finding shelter, water and being able to keep warm. Meet serving and former Royal Marines and find out what it takes to earn the privilege of wearing the coveted "Commando Green Beret".  See field survival skills in action, examine the kit bags that they take with them and sample some of the rations our servicemen and women eat when out on operations. Learn how to make your own cooking fire as our cave men ancestors.

Special Guest - Dr Daniel Quemby, a survivor from Bear Grylls the Island, will give an illustrated talk on “Jungle Survival and Medicine” at Saturday at 2.30pm.

“Hunt for Water” with the Devon Dowsers. Whether stuck out in the wilderness or just to help you design your garden features, Devon Dowsers will be here all weekend showing you how to divine for water on the Teaching Garden Lawn.

To bring out the Robin Hood in us all, a bowyer from North Devon Archery will be on hand to demonstrate how to make and then fire a bow.

There will be lots of living off the land ideas & demonstrations, hands-on craft activities & stalls in the temporary marquee, including herbal medicines, pottery makers and wood crafts. Also, come and meet the friendly Candenza Alpacas, animals which have been used as pack animals and ideal for their wool.

Free camouflage face painting by Devon Facepainting.
